The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has announced it will proceed with its nationwide congresses and planned national convention despite the failure of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to comply with court orders recognising the party’s leadership.
The party’s founder, Boniface Aniebonam, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday in Lagos, stressing that preparations for the 2027 general elections would not be stalled by ongoing disputes.
According to Aniebonam, the NNPP has already submitted its timetable of activities—including congresses, primaries, and convention—to INEC and remains committed to fielding candidates for all elective positions, including the presidency.
“We are going ahead with our programmes. We can no longer afford to deny our members the opportunity to participate in elections,” he said.
The NNPP leadership accused INEC of delaying the implementation of court rulings directing it to recognise the National Working Committee led by Agbo Major.
Aniebonam noted that prolonged legal battles and what he described as INEC’s inaction had previously limited the party’s participation in elections across the country.
“In view of these delays, we have resolved to proceed with our congresses and convention while awaiting INEC’s compliance with valid court orders,” he stated.
He maintained that court rulings take precedence over administrative decisions, arguing that there was no legal basis for INEC’s continued refusal to act.
The NNPP founder also reaffirmed the party’s determination to pursue all legal avenues to secure official recognition of its leadership ahead of the 2027 polls.
