Imo Lawmakers Back Uzodimma with Confidence Vote on Security

The Imo State House of Assembly has passed a vote of confidence on Gov. Hope Uzodimma for his “exemplary leadership in strengthening security, protection of citizens and driving socio-economic activities in the state.’’
The house took the position as part of the resolutions in a motion sponsored by the member representing Nkwerre state constituency, Mr Chisom Ojukwu (APC) during plenary on Wednesday in Owerri.
While presenting the motion, Ojukwu noted that the renewed security operations in the state under the leadership of Gov. Uzodimma had successfully dislodged notorious criminals’ hideouts and rescued Mr Ngozi Ogbu, a former lawmaker from the den of kidnappers.
He further noted that statistics showed a marked improvement in security, stating that armed robbery cases had declined from 502 in 2022 to 391 in 2024, representing a reduction of 22 per cent.
He said that ammunition recoveries increased from 1, 142 in 2020 to 2,242 in 2024 and more than 1,500 in the first quarter of 2025.
Ojukwu added that the enhanced security not only guaranteed the safety of lives and property, but also directly contributed to the economic growth and stability in the state.
The lawmaker observed that the improved security climate had restored nightlife and encouraged investment in hospitality sector, with Owerri reclaiming its place as a leading entertainment hub in the South-East geo-political zone.
He went on to add that Imo has been profiled as an emerging tourism hub, with rising hospitality opportunities, cultural heritage attractions and increased visitor inflows.
He, therefore, prayed the house to commend the governor for his unwavering commitment to securing the state and ensuring the dislodgement of criminals from their hideouts and the rescue of Mr Ngozi Ogbu.
Ojukwu also urged the house to commend the security agencies in the state for their gallantry and professionalism in carrying out the operations.
He encouraged the government to sustain the tempo of security operations in order to consolidate the gains achieved and to strengthen the growth of socio-economic activities in the state.
Supporting the motion, Mr Kennedy Ibeh (APC-Obowo), expressed confidence that more progress could be made in tackling insecurity through supports to government.
Also supporting the motion, Mr Kelechi Ofurum (APC-Owerri North), added that it is necessary to keep encouraging the governor to continue his good works.
He noted that the peace and security of the state had led to improved infrastructure, while commending the governor also for the local vigilante groups in every community.
In his contribution, Mr Uche Agabige (APC-Orsu), recalled that his constituency was among the worst hit local government areas during the peak of insecurity in the state.
He, therefore, commended Uzodimma for the “highly improved security’’ and for mapping out substantial funds for fighting insecurity in the state.
The motion was adopted following a unanimous vote in support of its prayers by members.
The Deputy Speaker, Mr Amarachi Iwuanyanwu (Nwangele) who presided directed the Clerk of the house to convey the resolutions to the office of the governor and other related bodies.
