MARAN to Inaugurate New Executive Council June 23, Focuses on Ethical Maritime Journalism

The Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria (MARAN) has finalized plans to inaugurate its newly elected Executive Council on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at Rockview Hotel, Apapa, Lagos.
The inauguration, expected to attract top stakeholders from the maritime, shipping, logistics, security, and media sectors, will serve as a platform for discussions on promoting professionalism and ethical standards in maritime journalism. The event is themed “Upholding Ethical Journalism for Maritime Development.”
President of the Maritime Security Providers Association of Nigeria (MASPAN), Emmanuel Maiguwa Gankino, will chair the occasion, while renowned public relations and event management expert, Mr. Bolaji Abimbola, is scheduled to deliver the keynote address.
Among the distinguished guests expected at the event are the Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dayo Mobereola; the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho; the Executive Secretary/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), Barr. Pius Akutah Ukeyima; and the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR. Other attendees will include heads of maritime agencies, industry leaders, terminal operators, shipping companies, freight forwarders, and representatives of key maritime associations.
Speaking ahead of the event, MARAN President, Comrade Oluyinka Onigbinde, described the inauguration as a significant milestone in the association’s efforts to deepen professionalism, credibility, and responsible reporting within the maritime sector.
According to Onigbinde, the new Executive Council is committed to repositioning MARAN as a stronger and more influential voice in the industry through capacity building, stakeholder engagement, and strict adherence to ethical journalism principles.
He noted that the theme reflects the critical role of the media in promoting transparency, accountability, and sustainable development across Nigeria’s maritime industry.
“The maritime industry remains a key driver of Nigeria’s economic growth, and ethical journalism is essential for ensuring accurate reporting, informed discourse, and constructive engagement on issues affecting the sector,” he said.
Onigbinde also called on government agencies, industry operators, and media practitioners to support initiatives aimed at strengthening maritime journalism and advancing Nigeria’s blue economy objectives.
The inauguration ceremony will formally usher in MARAN’s new leadership team, which is expected to drive the association toward greater relevance and impact within the nation’s maritime ecosystem.
