Former Minister of Interior and immediate past Governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola, has declared that he completed his eight-year tenure in office without owning a personal house, insisting that he never used public office to acquire private property.
Speaking while addressing supporters in a video that has circulated online, Aregbesola said he lived throughout his administration in an apartment owned by a friend. He explained that the residence was situated on his father’s land in Ilesha, Osun State.
The former governor claimed that his experience makes him unique among Nigerian governors, saying he is the only one to have served two full terms without building or owning a personal residence.
“I am the only governor in the whole of Nigeria who governed a state for eight years without having a house to call mine. I lived in my friend’s apartment for a good eight years in my father’s town at Ilesha,” he said.
Aregbesola challenged anyone disputing his assertion to produce evidence of any property he allegedly acquired while serving as governor.
“Whoever says I am lying should come out and show the houses I owned during my tenure,” he added.
He maintained that his public service record should be assessed based on verifiable facts rather than the widespread assumption that politicians inevitably accumulate wealth while in office.
The former minister stressed that transparency and accountability should remain the standards for evaluating public office holders, urging critics to substantiate any allegations against him with credible evidence.
