President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sadness over the death of retired Major-General Rabe Abubakar, who reportedly died while being held captive by terrorists in Katsina State.
In a statement, the President described the late military officer as a distinguished patriot who served the nation with honour before retiring from active service. General Abubakar was said to have been travelling to his hometown when he was abducted by armed criminals.
President Tinubu extended his heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, particularly his wife, who remains in captivity. He also sympathised with the government and people of Katsina State, as well as the Nigerian Armed Forces over the loss.
The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to combating terrorism and banditry, stressing that the Federal Government would not succumb to demands by terrorist groups for the release of their members currently in custody.
He reiterated his June 12 Democracy Day message, warning bandits, kidnappers, and sponsors of terrorism to surrender or face the full force of the law.
“Bandits, kidnappers, and sponsors of terror should now surrender or face the full force of the Nigerian State. These windows of surrender will not remain open forever, and no mercy will be shown to those who trade in the blood of Nigerians,” the President stated.
Tinubu urged Nigerians to remain united and resolute in the fight against insecurity, expressing confidence that the country would ultimately prevail over terrorism and other violent threats.
According to the President, the death of General Abubakar should serve as a turning point in Nigeria’s ongoing battle against terrorism and insurgency.
He maintained that terrorists must continue to be treated as enemies of the state and insisted that negotiations with such groups should not be an option.
President Tinubu concluded by assuring Nigerians that his administration remains committed to restoring peace, protecting lives, and securing the nation against all forms of criminality.
