The Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has issued a 21-day ultimatum to Temile Development Company Nigeria Ltd., warning of imminent industrial action if the firm continues to resist efforts to unionize its workforce.
MWUN, led by its President-General, Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, in collaboration with the Nigerian Merchant Navy Officers and Water Transport Senior Staff Association (NMNO-WTSSA), said the Port Harcourt-based company has repeatedly ignored formal requests to allow its employees join recognized labour unions.
According to the union, several letters dated May 26, September 16, and October 2025, as well as April 1, 2026, all titled “Request for the Unionization of Our Members in Your Company,” were sent to Temile Development Company but received no response.
Speaking on the development, Comrade Bunu stressed that no organization operates above established labour laws, warning against practices such as casualization, which he described as outdated and exploitative.
He maintained that modern labour standards prohibit the engagement of workers under unfair conditions, adding that any employer found violating these principles would face appropriate sanctions.
The union leader further demanded that the company respond to its correspondence and agree to a joint meeting within 21 days, failing which MWUN and its allies would take decisive action to enforce compliance.
