PORT THEFT ALERT: Criminals Strike at Lagos Seaports

The Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN), led by President-General Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, has raised serious concerns over a surge in thefts at the quay aprons of Lagos seaports.
The latest incident occurred aboard the vessel MV ZY JU HE at EKO Support around 4:00 a.m. on Sunday, where five tins of paint and a crew member’s mobile phone were stolen. Investigations revealed that perpetrators did not use a ladder to board the vessel, and poor lighting near the AFT store may have aided the theft.
Despite the efforts of the vessel’s safety personnel, whose alarm and whistle blasts were triggered, the items were thrown into the sea while the thieves escaped via a speedboat.
Comrade Bunu expressed outrage, describing the security at the ports as porous. He warned that such lapses threaten both crew members’ property and essential vessel maintenance materials.
The MWUN leader has called on all security agencies, including the Nigerian Police Force and the Nigerian Navy, to strengthen vigilance and ensure the seaports are safe for daily operations, emphasizing that Lagos ports must not gain a reputation as “unsafe” for business.
