Tragedy struck in the early hours of Monday when a two-storey building collapsed at No. 54, Cole Street, Cemetery Bus Stop, near UBA Bank in the Oyingbo area of Lagos State.
According to a situation report from the Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Mrs. Margaret Adeseye, emergency teams from the Sari-Iganmu Fire Station were dispatched to the scene shortly after a distress call was received around 12:20 a.m.
So far, 15 persons seven men, four women, and four children have been rescued with varying degrees of injury. The victims have been taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Ebute Meta, and the General Hospital, Odan, for medical attention.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the building had earlier been marked as distressed by relevant authorities but remained occupied despite warnings.
Adeseye confirmed that search and rescue operations are still ongoing, as emergency responders continue efforts to locate any remaining victims trapped beneath the rubble.
This incident comes barely a month after a similar two-storey building collapsed at Mangoro Bus Stop in Lagos’ Alimosho area, leaving one person injured and five others rescued. The 44-year-old male victim, who sustained multiple fractures and bruises, was later taken to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), where he was reported to be in stable condition.
Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, commended the swift response of emergency teams and assured that all rescued victims are receiving adequate medical care.
