Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has raised the alarm over an alleged directive to arrest leaders of the Accord Party in the state ahead of the forthcoming election, describing the development as a threat to democracy and the rule of law.
Adeleke, who spoke at a press briefing on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, said he had received what he described as credible reports of a police signal directing the immediate arrest of Accord Party leaders and their transfer to Abuja, where they would allegedly be held until Monday.
The governor said he had spoken with the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) over the reported directive and urged him to publicly clarify whether any such order had been issued.
According to Adeleke, arresting political party leaders on the eve of an election without due process would amount to political intimidation and could undermine the credibility of the electoral process.
“I task the IGP to issue a statement to assure Nigerians that no order has been given to arrest Accord Party leaders in Osun State,” Adeleke said, describing any such action as illegal and a threat to democratic governance.
The governor further alleged that more than 62 Accord Party leaders were currently being held in police detention without formal charges, describing the situation as unacceptable in a democratic society.
Adeleke also raised concerns over the alleged activities of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), accusing the unit of arresting Accord Party members across various local government areas without sufficient justification.
Adeleke Demands Probe Into Alleged Threats
The governor’s second major concern centred on a viral video allegedly involving serving Senator Francis Fadahunsi, in which the senator was purported to have made threats against Accord Party leaders and their families.
Adeleke described the alleged comments as having gone beyond political rivalry, characterising them as a potential national security concern requiring immediate investigation.
He said he had raised the matter with the Inspector-General of Police and called for the immediate investigation of the senator.
According to Adeleke, the IGP had confirmed awareness of the video and assured him that appropriate action would be taken.
The governor also called on the police and the Department of State Services (DSS) to investigate the alleged remarks and take appropriate action where criminality is established.
He urged the Federal Government, particularly the Office of the National Security Adviser, to treat the matter with the seriousness he believes it deserves.
Governor Calls for Due Process
Adeleke appealed to the police and other security agencies to operate within the bounds of the law and uphold their constitutional responsibilities before, during and after the election.
“We demand that the IGP enforce due process and fair policing by aborting all anti-people plots against democracy in Osun State,” he said.
The governor maintained that security agencies must remain politically neutral and ensure that all political actors are treated fairly, warning that actions capable of undermining public confidence in the electoral process could have serious consequences for democracy.
He called for an end to what he described as politically motivated arrests and urged security authorities to uphold the rule of law and their oath of office.
