LASWA, Pi-CNG Chart Course for Greener Lagos Waterways with CNG-Powered Ferries

In a bold move to revolutionize water transportation, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) on Tuesday, July 9, 2025, hosted a high-level strategic engagement with the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (Pi-CNG), alongside RIL Hydro Kraft Limited, top boat operators, and key marine stakeholders.

The meeting which was Held at LASWA’s headquarters in Ikoyi, marked a pivotal step towards embracing Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a cleaner, cost-effective energy alternative for ferries operating across Lagos inland waterways.

Organized at LASWA’s instance, the session focused on aligning national clean energy objectives with the on-ground realities of local boat operations.

Stakeholders explored the feasibility of transitioning to marine CNG, while fostering collaboration to ensure a smooth and inclusive energy shift in the sector.

LASWA General Manager, Mr. Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, in his welcome remarks, underscored the authority’s long-term commitment to environmental sustainability.

He stressed the strategic importance of introducing CNG-powered boats and electric ferries to reduce carbon emissions, cut operational costs, and enhance safety on Lagos waters—integral to the state’s future mobility vision.
Engr. Micheal Oluwagbemi, Project Director/CEO of Pi-CNG, led the federal delegation and laid out the national roadmap for CNG adoption.

He cited successes in road transport and reaffirmed government’s readiness to support marine CNG through policy frameworks, technical assistance, and infrastructure development.

Adding depth to the discussions, RIL Hydro Kraft Limited’s CEO, Mr. Layi Solesi, delivered a detailed technical presentation on the conversion process, fueling infrastructure, safety protocols, and long-term economic advantages of CNG usage in marine settings.

He shared real-world examples from other coastal cities and expressed readiness to partner on pilot projects with LASWA and local operators.

Boat operators raised practical concerns around cost, safety, engine compatibility, and fueling logistics.

In response, LASWA and the federal team assured stakeholders of a gradual rollout, inclusive engagement, and comprehensive training programs to ensure a smooth transition.

The meeting concluded with a renewed sense of optimism and commitment, reinforcing LASWA’s role as a proactive regulator driving sustainable innovation on Lagos waterways.

The path to a greener, safer, and more affordable marine transport system is now firmly underway.
