NPA Moves to Transform Ports with $700m Modernisation, Single Window System

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has reaffirmed its commitment to overhauling the nation’s port operations through the rollout of a comprehensive Ports Modernisation Programme and the National Single Window Project.
Managing Director of NPA, Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, made this known during an interactive session with maritime journalists in Lagos. He was represented by the General Manager, Corporate and Strategic Communications, Mr. Ikechukwu OnyemaKara.
Dantsoho disclosed that the modernisation initiative—expected to span all seaports across the country—will commence in Lagos with an estimated $700 million investment by the Federal Government.
According to him, the initiative is designed to address longstanding challenges such as port congestion, operational inefficiencies, and delays in cargo clearance, while significantly improving turnaround time and service delivery.
He further revealed that the Authority is enhancing logistics systems, including rail connectivity from the APM Terminals and the development of alternative cargo evacuation channels to ease pressure on road infrastructure.
The NPA is also reviewing the Efficiency, Throughput and Optimization (ETO) system introduced to streamline port access and truck movements. The review, he said, will ensure a more effective and seamless implementation of the platform.
Dantsoho noted that previous dredging projects were executed with consideration for eastern ports, but explained that current investments are being prioritised based on return on investment, making Lagos the logical starting point.
Expressing optimism about the reforms, the NPA boss said the ongoing initiatives are aimed at creating a sustainable and globally competitive ports system that will serve future generations.
He also called on the media to intensify its watchdog role, stressing the importance of a vibrant press in promoting transparency, accountability, and national development.
