President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the posting of 65 ambassadors-designate—comprising 31 career diplomats and 34 non-career appointees—to Nigeria’s foreign missions across the world and to the United Nations, marking a major step in strengthening the country’s diplomatic presence.
The ambassadors were earlier confirmed by the Senate in December, following their nomination by the President.
According to details released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the non-career ambassadors include several former public officials, technocrats, and political figures assigned to strategic missions across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas.
Among the prominent non-career appointments are Senator Ita Enang to South Africa, Reno Omokri to Mexico, Lt. Gen. Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau to China, Femi Fani-Kayode to Germany, Lateef Kayode Are to the United States, and Senator Jimoh Ibrahim as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
Others include former INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu to Qatar, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas to the Philippines, Olufemi Pedro to Australia, Professor Isaac Adewole to Canada, and Ayodele Oke to France.
The career diplomats, drawn from the foreign service, have been assigned to missions across Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. Notable postings include Ambassador Mohammed Mahmud Lele to Algeria, Ambassador Ahmed Mohammed Monguno to Egypt, Ambassador Abdussalam Habu Zayyad to Senegal, Ambassador Shehu Ilu Barde to Ghana, and Ambassador Ayeni Adebayo Emmanuel to Belgium.
Other career envoys will head Nigerian missions in India, Morocco, Iran, Kenya, Tanzania, Switzerland, Thailand, the Netherlands, and Namibia, among several others.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed that the United Kingdom has already granted agrément for Ambassador Aminu Dalhatu, who will serve as Nigeria’s High Commissioner to the UK, while France has approved agrément for Ambassador Ayodele Oke.
The ministry also confirmed that requests for agrément have been sent to the remaining host countries for the other ambassadors-designate, in accordance with established diplomatic protocol.
President Tinubu has further directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to immediately commence an induction programme for the envoys ahead of their deployment to various missions.
The postings are expected to reinforce Nigeria’s diplomatic engagements, promote economic cooperation, and strengthen bilateral relations with key partners across the globe.
