Turning Weeds into Wealth: LASWA Empowers Women, Youths in Epe

The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has successfully concluded a five-day Water Hyacinth Recycling Training Programme for women and youths in Eredo Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Epe, reaffirming its commitment to environmental sustainability and inclusive economic empowerment.
The training, held from January 19 to 23, 2026, in partnership with social enterprise Mitimeth, equipped 50 participants with practical skills to convert invasive water hyacinth into innovative, marketable products. The initiative addresses the twin challenges of waterway pollution and unemployment by transforming an environmental nuisance into an economic resource.
Participants received hands-on instruction in harvesting, processing and recycling water hyacinth, alongside sessions on safety standards, entrepreneurship and sustainable environmental practices. The programme emphasized creativity, self-reliance and responsible ecosystem management.

Speaking on the initiative, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Blue Economy, Mr. Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, said the programme reflects LASWA’s drive to deploy innovative solutions that enhance waterway safety, protect the environment and improve livelihoods. He noted that converting water hyacinth into income-generating products aligns with Lagos State’s broader vision for sustainability, job creation and inclusive growth.
Mitimeth facilitated the training with practical demonstrations and close mentorship, enabling participants to immediately apply their new skills. At the close of the programme, trainees showcased a range of recycled products and expressed plans to form cooperatives and micro-enterprises to sustain the initiative.

The Executive Chairman of Eredo LCDA, Hon. Monsuru Akinloye, commended LASWA for bringing the programme to the community, describing it as a timely intervention with the potential to curb water hyacinth infestation while empowering women and youths with valuable vocational skills.
LASWA disclosed that more than 450 women and young people have benefited from similar trainings across riverine communities in Lagos State, with plans underway to scale up the initiative statewide in pursuit of sustainable livelihoods and stronger environmental stewardship.
