MWUN Slams Poor Safety at Warri Port, Demands Urgent Action on Rising Accidents

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has sounded the alarm over worsening safety conditions at Warri Port, warning that the facility has become the hotspot for workplace accidents in the nation’s seaports.

MWUN President-General, Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, in a meeting with the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) management in Warri, decried the alarming rate of injuries suffered by workers and accused the authorities of lax enforcement of safety standards.

Abi demanded the immediate reactivation of tally clerks and onboard gangway security men, alongside 24-hour surveillance, stressing that full compliance with the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code is non-negotiable.

“Safety must not be an afterthought. The guiding principle at Warri Port should be one word: safety,” Abi declared, warning that lives and livelihoods remain at stake unless urgent corrective measures are taken.
