TAIWO AFOLABI CUP PRODUCING FUTURE SUPER EAGLES

Former Nigerian internationals Daniel Amokachi, Dosu Joseph, Tajudeen Disu, Fatai Amoo, and Waidi Akanni were among football legends who attended the grand finale of the 10th edition of the Taiwo Afolabi Football Tournament at the Onikan Stadium, Lagos.

The annual U-17 competition, sponsored by Dr. Taiwo Afolabi, Chairman of SIFAX Group, has become one of Lagos State’s leading grassroots football tournaments, providing a platform for discovering, nurturing, and promoting young football talents.

At the end of the competition, Fortune FA of Oshodi emerged champions in the boys’ category after defeating Dynamo FC of Iwaya 2-0, courtesy of goals from Quadri Popoola and Agbato Wasiu.

In the girls’ category, Labro Queen FC of Oyingbo secured the title after a tense encounter against Starlet Girls FC of Idimu. Following a goalless draw in regulation time, Labro Queen triumphed 5-4 in a penalty shootout.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Taiwo Afolabi, accompanied by his wife, Mrs. Folashade Afolabi, reflected on the tournament’s decade-long journey and its contribution to youth development through sports.

He recalled that the competition started as a simple football fixture organized around his birthday but has since evolved into a structured platform dedicated to identifying and supporting young football talents.

According to Afolabi, the initiative was established to create opportunities for young people to channel their energy positively, develop discipline, and gain exposure that could shape their future careers.

“We need to encourage the youth because without encouragement, they cannot succeed. Young, talented football players require consistent guidance, mentorship, and platforms that help them build their skills and confidence while remaining focused on achieving their full potential both on and off the pitch,” he said.

The Lagos State Grassroots Soccer Association also praised Afolabi and SIFAX Group for sustaining the tournament over the last decade.

Secretary of the association, Aliyu Ganiyu, noted that the competition has become a vital pathway for youth football development in Lagos, producing several players who have gone on to play professionally in Nigeria and abroad.

As the tournament marks its 10th anniversary, stakeholders say its growing impact underscores the importance of private-sector investment in grassroots sports development and youth empowerment.
