Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano State, is set to formally defect from the New Nigeria Peoples Party to the African Democratic Congress on Monday, March 30, 2026.
The announcement was made by the Kwankwasiyya Movement through its spokesperson, Dr. Habibu Sale Mohammed, who confirmed that all arrangements for the transition have been concluded ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to the statement, Kwankwaso will officially register with the ADC at 12 noon at his residence, Gidan Kwankwasiyya, located on Miller Road in Kano.
The movement also directed its members nationwide to immediately begin registration with the ADC across their respective wards, local government areas, and states, urging them to actively participate in party activities.
“This strategic decision has been taken in the best interest of the movement, our state, and the nation at large,” the statement noted, adding that the move underscores a continued commitment to democratic values and good governance.
The development follows a recent visit by Rauf Aregbesola, National Secretary of the ADC and former governor of Osun State, to Kwankwaso in Abuja fueling speculations of an imminent political realignment.
Momentum around the defection had intensified during the recent Kwankwasiyya Eid gathering in Kano, where supporters chanted the name of Peter Obi, signalling possible political undercurrents ahead of the 2027 elections.
Kwankwaso’s formal registration on Monday will mark a significant turning point, closing his chapter with the NNPP a party he was instrumental in building and opening a new political path within the ADC.
