In a move that reinforces Ondo State’s long-standing maritime ambitions, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr Adegboyega Oyetola, CON, has presented the revalidated certificate for the Ondo Deep Sea Port to the state governor, Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, in Abuja.
The presentation, which took place on Thursday, 18 December 2025, marks a significant milestone for both Ondo State and Nigeria’s broader blue economy strategy. For Dr Oyetola, the revalidation represents more than an administrative exercise; it is a deliberate Federal Government intervention aimed at unlocking the state’s coastal and maritime potential while strengthening Nigeria’s position in global shipping and logistics.
Describing the port as a strategic national asset, the minister noted that the Ondo Deep Sea Port is expected to ease congestion at existing ports, stimulate industrialisation, and create a new hub for exports, manufacturing and employment. He stressed that the project aligns seamlessly with the Federal Government’s economic diversification agenda, particularly its focus on maritime infrastructure, coastal development and non-oil exports.
According to Dr Oyetola, the port’s Atlantic corridor location gives it a competitive edge, positioning Ondo State as a gateway for trade and investment in the South-West and beyond. He added that the revalidated licence provides renewed confidence for investors, signalling Nigeria’s readiness to attract serious long-term maritime investments.
Receiving the certificate, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa described the moment as the reward for years of persistence and institutional engagement.
He acknowledged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Executive Council for approving the revalidation, recalling that the original licence—secured during his tenure as deputy governor—was delayed by technical issues, including a naming error that necessitated a fresh and more robust submission.
For Governor Aiyedatiwa, the revalidated certificate represents a turning point in Ondo State’s development trajectory. He said it affirms the state’s vision of leveraging its extensive coastline to drive industrial growth, job creation and sustainable economic development.
The governor disclosed that his administration is already laying the groundwork to maximise the port’s impact, with plans for dualised access roads, upgraded industrial zones and complementary infrastructure. He also outlined preparations for residential, educational and hospitality developments to support the anticipated influx of investors, workers and allied businesses.
Emphasising inclusive growth, Governor Aiyedatiwa noted that the Ondo Deep Sea Port and its associated projects are designed to benefit all parts of the state, positioning Ondo as an emerging maritime and industrial powerhouse in Nigeria’s evolving blue economy landscape.
