MARAN Launches Landmark Book Celebrating Champions of Nigeria’s Maritime and Blue Economy

The Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria (MARAN) has unveiled a landmark publication recognising key individuals and institutions shaping the nation’s maritime and blue economy sectors.
The book, titled “Fifty Drivers of the Nigerian Maritime and Blue Economy,” was formally launched in Lagos on Thursday, marking a significant step in documenting the evolution, reforms, and leadership that have defined Nigeria’s maritime trajectory. The ceremony, themed “Driving the Blue Agenda: Recognizing Champions Steering Nigeria’s Marine Economy,” attracted leading industry stakeholders who gathered to honour distinguished contributors to sectoral growth.

Chairman of the event and former Minister of Interior, Capt. Emmanuel Ihenacho, described the maritime industry as a “vital component” of Nigeria’s economy with vast, yet underutilised potential for national development. He commended past and present leaders for laying the foundation for progress, tracing the sector’s institutional journey from the establishment of the National Shipping Line in 1959 to the creation of NIMASA in 2007.
“The theme of this launch fittingly highlights the individuals, institutions, and innovations driving Nigeria’s marine and blue economy,” Ihenacho said.

Delivering remarks on behalf of the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), Dr. Pius Ukeyima Akutah, Assistant Director of Operations Mrs. Juliana Saka described the publication as a timely contribution to industry knowledge. She praised MARAN for its vision and professionalism in chronicling the efforts of sector players.
“The marine and blue economy presents vast opportunities that demand collaboration, innovation, reliable data, and accountability,” Akutah said. “This publication deepens public understanding, celebrates unsung contributors, and enriches conversations shaping policy, investment, and sustainable development.”

Former Executive Secretary of the NSC, Mr. Hassan Bello, in his goodwill message, described the celebration as timely in light of the sector’s more than six decades of consistent growth. He emphasised the maritime industry’s central role in national development.
“Across generations, we must unite to strengthen the sector, preserve its legacy, and continue building on the achievements of those who came before us,” Bello said.
Reviewing the publication, former SERVICOM General Manager at the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Mrs. Carol Ufere, noted that the book provides research-driven insights into ministries, agencies, industry reformers, and policy directions shaping the blue economy. She highlighted its focus on governance, innovation, digitalisation, maritime security, and institutional strengthening.

According to Ufere, the chapters explore the work of NIMASA, NPA, NIWA, the Nigeria Customs Service, the Nigerian Railway Authority, and other key institutions, while analysing achievements, ongoing challenges, and the reforms required to boost competitiveness and sustainability.
Earlier in his welcome address, MARAN Caretaker Committee Chairman, Mr. Tunde Ayodele, said the publication was produced to honour men, women, organisations, and institutions whose leadership has significantly influenced Nigeria’s maritime development.
“This launch is a historic moment for both MARAN and the maritime sector,” Ayodele said. “Through extensive research, the book showcases outstanding leaders, private-sector contributors, and public agencies driving reforms and innovation. It also recognises emerging talents whose contributions will shape the future of the industry.”
Ayodele expressed gratitude to stakeholders and guests whose presence underscored the importance of the publication to the sector.
