The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has made a passionate appeal to the Honourable Attorney General of the Federation, Chief Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), to urgently advise the newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, to comply with a subsisting court judgment and update the party’s legitimate national officers on its official website.
Addressing a press conference, the NNPP stated that the appeal followed INEC’s continued refusal under its former leadership to recognize and upload the officers produced from the party’s duly conducted congresses and convention led by its Founder and Chairman, Board of Trustees, Dr. Boniface Okechukwu Aniebonam.
The party recalled that on December 16, 2024, a faction of the NNPP loyal to former presidential candidate Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and led by Dr. Ahmed Ajuji had approached the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) seeking to halt the party’s congresses and convention, describing them as illegal.
After three months of legal proceedings, the FCT High Court, presided over by Justice M.A. Hassan, dismissed the suit in a landmark judgment, affirming the legitimacy of the Aniebonam-led NNPP leadership. The judgment effectively made the Ajuji-led Kwankwaso faction the judgment debtor and the Aniebonam-led group the judgment creditor.
However, the NNPP expressed disappointment that despite this clear judicial pronouncement, the former INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, failed to comply with the ruling by updating the Commission’s records to reflect the court’s decision.
Describing INEC’s inaction as “disgusting and appalling,” the party lamented what it called the Commission’s “flagrant disobedience to court rulings,” stressing that such disregard undermines Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
The NNPP disclosed that in a letter dated October 15, 2025, and officially received by the Federal Ministry of Justice, it sought the intervention of the Attorney General to ensure INEC’s compliance with the FCT High Court judgment (Suit No. FCT/HC/CV/5518/2024). Copies of the letter, the party said, have been presented to the media and the public.
“We strongly believe in the integrity and impeccable record of Chief Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), the Chief Law Officer of the Federation, and his ability to advise INEC and other agencies on the importance of total obedience to the rule of law,” the statement read.
The party also expressed optimism that the new INEC Chairman, Prof. Amupitan, will fulfill his promise made during his Senate screening to reform the Commission and correct the lapses of his predecessor.
“To sustain our democracy, total adherence to the rule of law is non-negotiable,” the statement concluded. “We must not continue this way any longer.”
