The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has reviewed the results of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) earlier released on Monday.
Head of National Office(Nigeria), Dr Amos Dangut, made this known in a statement issued on Friday.
According to him, after the review, 62.96 percent of the candidates who sat for the examination had credits and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
You will Recall, the 2025 school candidates (May/June) results, released by the examination body on Monday, made a record as the worst WASSCE performance in more than a decade.
The body revealed that only 38 per cent of the candidates secured at least a credit in five subjects, including English and Mathematics, a prerequisite for admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions.
Nigeria only had a record this low in 2014 when only 29.27 per cent of the candidates obtained credit in at least five subjects, including English and Mathematics. The 2014 result itself was better than those of 2013 and 2012.
However, after the release of results, the Council said its post-result review revealed some technical bugs affecting the affected subjects. Consequently, access to results via the online portal has been temporarily suspended.
In a statement on Thursday, Moyosola Adesina, acting head of public affairs at WAEC, said the glitches were discovered during an internal post-release review.
Adesina noted that the council has suspended access to the result-checking portal after uncovering the technical errors.
“As part of our efforts to curb examination malpractice, the Council embarked on an innovation (paper serialization) already deployed by a national examination body. It is also worth noting that this is in line with best practices in assessment.
The paper serialization was carried out in Mathematics, English Language, Biology and Economics. However, an internal post result release procedure revealed some technical bugs in the results.”
Adesina said the council is taking urgent steps to rectify the glitches to ensure fairness and credibility.
