The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and the Alumni Association of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria (AMANO) have renewed their commitment to strengthening collaboration on seafarer development, capacity building and the overall growth of Nigeria’s maritime industry.
The renewed partnership was reaffirmed during a courtesy visit by AMANO President, Mr. Emmanuel Maiguwa, and members of the association to the Director-General of NIMASA, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, at the Agency’s headquarters in Lagos.
Speaking during the engagement, Mobereola said NIMASA remained committed to building an efficient, transparent and globally competitive maritime administration capable of responding effectively to the changing demands of the international shipping industry.
He said the Agency would continue to implement reforms aimed at improving regulatory efficiency, promoting innovation and expanding opportunities for Nigerian seafarers, in line with the policy direction of the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy.
“Our vision is to build a maritime administration that is efficient, transparent and globally competitive. We will continue to implement reforms that strengthen regulatory oversight, promote innovation and expand opportunities for Nigerian seafarers,” Mobereola stated.

The NIMASA Director-General described the maritime sector as a key driver of Nigeria’s economic development, stressing that professional bodies and industry associations such as AMANO have an important role to play in advancing the sector.
He emphasised the need for sustained engagement among stakeholders to develop policies and programmes capable of unlocking the full potential of Nigeria’s maritime industry.
Earlier, Maiguwa commended NIMASA for deploying its electronic platform for the issuance of Seafarers’ Certificates, describing the initiative as a significant step towards improving efficiency, transparency and accessibility in the certification process.
He also praised NIMASA’s strategic partnerships and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), noting that they have opened up opportunities for the training, certification and employment of Nigerian seafarers.
The AMANO President, however, identified several areas requiring stronger collaboration, including the expansion of the Nigerian Seafarers Development Programme (NSDP), increased stakeholder participation in maritime policy formulation and effective implementation of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW).
Other areas highlighted were stronger protection for seafarers against abandonment, the establishment of a sustainable pension framework and improved welfare initiatives for maritime professionals.
The two organisations also reviewed critical issues affecting Nigeria’s maritime sector, including seafarer development, implementation of international maritime conventions and greater stakeholder involvement in policy formulation.
The meeting ultimately reinforced the shared commitment of NIMASA and AMANO to promoting sustainable maritime development, strengthening human capacity and positioning Nigerian seafarers for greater participation in the global shipping industry.
