The Lagos State Government has officially commenced the Project Management, Operations and Design (PMOD) Consultancy for the Omi Eko Project, a major step towards delivering a modern, efficient and environmentally sustainable water transportation system across the state.
Speaking at the PMOD Consultancy Kick-off Meeting in Lagos, the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, described the exercise as a significant milestone in the implementation of one of Africa’s most ambitious inland waterways transport initiatives.
He said the consultancy would provide the technical leadership, operational planning and project management expertise required to ensure the successful delivery of the Omi Eko Project.
According to Osiyemi, the initiative goes beyond the construction of modern ferry terminals and deployment of electric ferries, noting that it is designed to improve connectivity, reduce travel time, enhance passenger safety, stimulate economic activities and promote environmental sustainability through cleaner transport solutions.
“The Omi Eko Project represents one of the most ambitious investments in inland waterways transportation in Africa. It is designed to reshape urban mobility while creating lasting economic and environmental benefits for Lagos residents,” he said.
The Commissioner stressed that the PMOD consultants would play a central role in coordinating stakeholders, supporting implementation and ensuring that the project is delivered in line with global best practices.
He noted that the success of the project would depend on strong collaboration among the Lagos State Government, development partners, consultants, contractors and host communities.

Osiyemi also conveyed the appreciation of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration to the French Development Agency (AFD), the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Union (EU) for their continued support towards the state’s vision of sustainable urban mobility.
He further commended the Omi Eko Project Team, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) and other stakeholders for their commitment in advancing the project.
Speaking on behalf of the PMOD Consultancy, the Head of Delegation and Director of the International Unit at Planet SA, Mr. Dimitris Galanis, pledged the firm’s commitment to delivering world-class project management, operational planning and technical expertise throughout the implementation of the project.
“We are honoured to partner with the Lagos State Government and its development partners on this transformational project. Our team is committed to delivering international best practices that will support a safe, efficient and sustainable water transport system for millions of Lagos residents,” Galanis said.
The Omi Eko Project is the Lagos State Government’s flagship water transportation initiative aimed at revolutionising ferry operations through modern infrastructure, electric-powered ferry services and improved operational systems, while driving economic growth and environmental sustainability.
Osiyemi expressed confidence that the expertise of the PMOD consultancy team, coupled with the commitment of all stakeholders, would ensure the successful delivery of the landmark project
