LASWA Kicks Off 5th Edition of Water Savvy Kids Program in Badagry

By Amina Ojelabi

The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has commenced the fifth edition of its Water Savvy Kids Program  a week-long water safety and swimming training initiative aimed at promoting water confidence and safety awareness among school children in Lagos State.
The program, which began on Monday, October 20, 2025, in Badagry Local Government Area, is part of LASWA’s continuous advocacy drive to reduce the fear of water among young Lagosians and promote safe usage of the state’s waterways.

Organized in collaboration with the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and the Dolphin Swim School (DSS)  a leading aquatic training institution dedicated to empowering women and children — the initiative combines theoretical and practical lessons on swimming techniques, water safety, and basic emergency response.
A total of 50 pupils from five public schools in Badagry were selected to participate in this year’s edition. The schools were chosen from riverine communities where waterway transportation is a regular part of daily life.

Speaking on the program, LASWA emphasized that as Lagos continues to expand its water transport network, it is vital for young commuters to be both familiar with the waterways environment and adequately equipped to respond to emergencies.
Through the Water Savvy Kids initiative, LASWA aims to nurture a new generation of confident, safety-conscious, and self-reliant waterway users.
The one-week training will run until Friday, October 24, 2025.
