Tragedy struck in the early hours of Saturday, August 23, 2025, when a Toyota Camry saloon car veered off the 3rd Mainland Bridge and plunged into the Lagos Lagoon inward Iyana Iworo, leaving two people dead.
The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) confirmed the incident in a Search and Rescue (SAR) operation report, noting that its emergency team responded immediately after receiving a distress call.
According to LASWA, the first victim, a woman identified as Aisha, aged between 25 and 35 years, was swiftly recovered from the lagoon by local divers and her body handed over to her family.
Emergency response units from LASWA, the Marine Police, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), and the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) worked in close coordination at the scene, with invaluable support from local fishermen who assisted in the recovery efforts.
While initial reports suggested the car carried only one occupant, further investigations revealed a second passenger.
He was later identified as 31-year-old Chado Daniel Danladi, a resident of Oremeta Street, Off Opebi Link Bridge, Ikeja, and a colleague of the first victim. His body was recovered in the extended phase of the SAR operation and subsequently handed over to his family.
Authorities have commended the swift and coordinated response that ensured both victims were recovered, while stressing the importance of continuous collaboration between government agencies and community members in tackling waterway emergencies in Lagos.
