A heated war of words has erupted between award-winning Nollywood filmmaker Kunle Afolayan and media personality Kudirat Kolapo, popularly known as Yeye Kudi, following reports alleging that FirstBank sued the filmmaker over an alleged ₦5 billion loan.
The controversy began after several blogs, including Yeye Kudi’s social media platform, Yeye Kudi Court Room, published reports claiming that FirstBank had initiated legal action against Afolayan over an alleged ₦5 billion loan reportedly obtained to finance his 2022 blockbuster film, Aníkúlápó.
Afolayan, however, swiftly dismissed the reports as false and misleading, insisting that neither he nor his company owes FirstBank ₦5 billion.
In a video shared on Friday, the filmmaker said the reports had caused unnecessary concern among his family, friends, and supporters.
“I try not to do this, but for whatever it is worth, and also for those who are well-wishers, friends and family who are really worried about the publication of this nonsense they are spreading around, saying we’re owing ₦5 billion,” Afolayan said.
He added humorously that he would gladly welcome such a loan facility if any financial institution was willing to offer it.
The disagreement took a dramatic turn when Afolayan confronted Yeye Kudi in the comment section of her post, questioning her legal qualifications and criticizing her for sharing the report.
In response, Yeye Kudi, who says she holds both a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and a Master of Laws (LLM), fired back with a series of strongly worded remarks, accusing the filmmaker of directing his frustration at her while maintaining that the report had been widely circulated.
The exchange quickly gained traction on social media, with users divided over the public spat. While some criticized the use of personal insults by both parties, others argued that the incident underscores the importance of verifying information before publication and responding to disputes through appropriate legal channels.
As of the time of filing this report, FirstBank has not publicly issued a fresh statement addressing the alleged ₦5 billion debt claim, while the online exchanges between Afolayan and Yeye Kudi continue to generate widespread reactions.
