The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the hearing of his application challenging the revocation of his bail.
In a ruling delivered on Monday, Justice Mohammed Umar directed that Sowore remain in custody until June 24, when the court will hear and determine his motion seeking a stay of execution of the order revoking his bail and the bench warrant issued for his arrest.
The application was filed by Sowore’s new counsel, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, following the court’s June 16 decision to revoke the defendant’s bail and issue a warrant for his arrest after he failed to appear in court to open his defence.
Sowore had previously chosen to represent himself after his legal team withdrew from the case. Meanwhile, Justice Umar also dismissed a separate application seeking his recusal from the trial over allegations of bias, clearing the way for the proceedings to continue.
