Gunmen suspected to be bandits have reportedly launched an attack on the Old Oyo National Park in the Oke Ogun geopolitical zone of Oyo State, sparking fears of casualties among park personnel.
Details of the incident remain sketchy, with the exact number of casualties yet to be confirmed as of Wednesday afternoon.
Confirming the development, the Public Relations Officer of the Oyo State Police Command, SP Olayinka Ayanlade, said security agencies had been alerted and were already responding to the situation.
“Yes, there was an attack by yet-to-be-identified men against personnel of the National Park,” Ayanlade said in a statement made available to journalists.
He disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, CP Femi Haruna, alongside other security chiefs, was en route to the affected area to assess the situation firsthand.
According to him, tactical units, including Mobile Police Force operatives of the Nigeria Police Force and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, have been deployed to the park to forestall further breakdown of law and order.
Security agencies are expected to provide more details as operations continue and the situation becomes clearer.
