Tincan Command Concludes Week-Long In-House Staff Training Programme

The Tincan Island Port Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has successfully concluded a week-long in-house training programme designed to enhance the capacity, professionalism, and operational efficiency of its senior officers.
The intensive exercise, held within the Command premises from Monday, October 13 to Friday, October 17, 2025, brought together officers from various units and departments for a series of practical and knowledge-driven sessions.


Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Frank Onyeka, underscored the importance of continuous learning and capacity development in sustaining excellence within the Service.
“This training is not just a routine exercise but an investment in the growth of our personnel,” Onyeka said. “I urge all officers to apply the knowledge gained to their daily responsibilities and continue to strive for excellence in service delivery.”

The Comptroller further disclosed that while the concluded session focused on senior officers, plans are underway to organize a similar programme for junior officers, ensuring that no cadre is left behind in the Command’s drive for enhanced efficiency and professionalism.
Resource persons for the training were drawn from within the Command, reflecting the wealth of expertise and experience available internally. Key topics covered included Physical Examination, Reputation Management, Risk Management and Documentary Checks, Evidence Exploitation, Customs Procedure Codes, Customs Classification, VIN Valuation, Customs Valuation, Code of Conduct, and Customs Administration, among others.

In his closing remarks, Comptroller Onyeka reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to building a highly skilled, knowledgeable, and proactive workforce capable of meeting the dynamic challenges of modern customs operations.
Participants expressed deep appreciation for the quality and relevance of the training, noting that the sessions provided practical insights that would significantly improve their performance.
Assistant Controller Rose Bonat of the Transire Unit described the programme as a “laudable and forward-thinking initiative,” commending the leadership of the Command for its commitment to staff development.
“This training has broadened my understanding and equipped me with tools directly applicable to my role,” she said. “It has also exposed me to updated Standard Operating Procedures and best practices that will enhance my efficiency and confidence on the job.”

The Tincan Island Command, under Comptroller Onyeka’s leadership, continues to prioritize human capital development as a strategic pillar for achieving operational excellence within the Nigeria Customs Service.
