FAAN Announces 25-Day Proposed Closure of Owerri Airport Runway for Repairs

By Tayo oduwole

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to temporarily close the runway at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, Imo State, for essential repairs and resurfacing.
In a press release dated October 8, 2026, FAAN said the proposed closure is expected to commence on October 20 and last approximately 25 days, subject to final confirmation.
The authority attributed the planned repairs to the deterioration of sections of the runway, including potholes and extensive surface cracks, which have been worsened by recent heavy rainfall.
According to FAAN, the rehabilitation will involve pavement repairs, crack treatment and resurfacing of affected sections to improve runway safety and operational conditions ahead of the anticipated increase in passenger and flight traffic during the Christmas season.
The proposed intervention will also include runway extension works to enable the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft as air traffic to the region grows. FAAN said the expansion is aimed at improving passenger comfort and providing a more seamless travel experience.
The authority has advised passengers travelling through Owerri during the proposed closure period to maintain contact with their respective airlines for updates on flight schedules and possible alternative arrangements.
FAAN added that it would continue engaging relevant stakeholders and announce the confirmed closure and reopening dates once finalised.
The authority appealed for the understanding and cooperation of airport users, reaffirming its commitment to ensuring safe, efficient and reliable airport operations.
