The Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA) has commenced activities marking its 72nd anniversary with a table tennis tournament that saw Habib Adebayo of the Kirikiri Lighter Terminal (KLT) Chapter emerge champion.
The competition, held at the Not Bad Sports Arena, Egbeda, Lagos, featured 14 players representing various ANLCA chapters, including Apapa, Tin Can Island, PTML, Kano, Airport, Seme, KLT and Port Harcourt.
Adebayo defeated Olatunde Tayo of the Seme Chapter in three straight sets to claim the championship trophy and a cash prize of N250,000. Tayo finished runner-up and received N150,000, while Ibrahim Jamiu of the Airport Chapter and Oladele Olaoye of Port Harcourt Area 1 shared the third-place position and N100,000 prize.
The tournament was formally declared open by ANLCA President, Sir Emenike Nwokeoji, alongside the Chairman of the 72nd Anniversary Local Organising Committee and Vice President of the association, Prince Segun Oduntan.
Speaking after the competition, Nwokeoji commended the organising committee and participants for the successful event, describing the turnout and quality of play as encouraging. He congratulated the winners and praised all the competitors for displaying sportsmanship, noting that the tournament provided an avenue for members from different chapters to interact beyond their professional environment.
Earlier, Oduntan said the table tennis competition was the second in a series of sporting activities lined up for the anniversary celebration. He explained that the initiative was designed to promote physical fitness, healthy recreation and stronger social bonds among ANLCA members.
According to him, the 72nd anniversary celebration goes beyond commemorating the association’s long history, as it also focuses on promoting the welfare, unity and wellbeing of its members.
The event was attended by ANLCA Patron, Chief Taiye Oyeniyi, the association’s Zonal Coordinator, East, as well as chapter chairmen and members from various locations.
The winners commended the ANLCA leadership for organising the tournament and called for its continuation and expansion in subsequent editions.
The anniversary programme continues on Monday, with President Nwokeoji expected to lead an ANLCA delegation on an outreach to privileged members.
