Nigeria strengthens international ties ahead of UN Ocean Conference in France
Nigeria’s Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, CON, joined world leaders on Sunday, June 8, 2025, at the Blue Economy and Finance Forum in Monaco a high-level gathering hosted by Prince Albert II of Monaco in the lead-up to the UN Ocean Conference scheduled for Nice, France.
According to a statement from his media adviser, Dr. Bolaji Akinola, the event held at the Grimaldi Forum attracted global dignitaries including Prince William, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, among others.
With the theme focused on a regenerative blue economy and sustainable ocean finance, the forum emphasized urgent global collaboration to protect marine ecosystems, scale up investment in SDG 14 (Life Below Water), and promote science-driven ocean governance.
Representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Oyetola highlighted Nigeria’s dedication to marine sustainability, climate adaptation, and economic diversification through its evolving blue economy initiatives. He reiterated Nigeria’s readiness to adopt inclusive, science-based strategies for sustainable ocean resource management.
On the sidelines, the minister held strategic discussions with other leaders and marine experts to foster cooperation on marine conservation, capacity building, and regional partnerships across West and Central Africa.
Oyetola’s participation reinforces Nigeria’s role as an active contributor to shaping international policies ahead of the UN Ocean Conference in Nice, where global agreements on expanding marine protected areas are expected to be finalized.
