In a unique show of support for sports and youth empowerment, the Tin Can Island Port Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has pledged partnership with the Nigerian Professional Wrestling Federation (NPWF) ahead of the forthcoming African International Wrestling Championship.
The event, scheduled to hold from October 18 to 19, 2025, at Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, Anambra State, is expected to attract wrestling icons and rising stars from Nigeria, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and several African countries.
During a courtesy visit to the Command’s headquarters in Lagos on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, NPWF President Chief John Uche led a delegation to formally brief the Customs leadership about the upcoming international tournament.
Chief Uche noted that the championship is designed to spotlight Nigeria’s untapped wrestling potential and provide a platform for over 100 young Nigerians to benefit from grassroots sports development initiatives. He emphasized the Federation’s mission to tackle youth restiveness, reduce poverty, and create sustainable livelihoods through sporting engagements.
Receiving the delegation, Comptroller Frank Onyeka, Area Controller of Tin Can Island Command, commended the Federation’s commitment to youth development and recognized its efforts in promoting homegrown sporting talent.
He reaffirmed the Nigeria Customs Service’s dedication to supporting national development through sports, noting that under the leadership of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, psc (+), the Service continues to back initiatives that foster talent, unity, and economic growth.
The highlight of the visit was the presentation of the championship trophy and an award of excellence to Comptroller Onyeka by the NPWF leadership — a gesture symbolizing partnership and shared commitment to the success of the upcoming tournament.
