Customs, Defence Bureau Test Indigenous Airboat to Boost Anti-Smuggling Operations

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and the Defence Research and Development Bureau (DRDB) have jointly tested a locally built airboat, designed to strengthen maritime security and enhance anti-smuggling operations.

The test exercise, held on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at Jabi Lake in Abuja, showcased the vessel’s ability to operate in shallow and difficult waterways, making it a strategic asset for security operations. Experts described the innovation as a milestone in indigenous technology and a boost to Nigeria’s security capabilities.

Speaking at the event, Comptroller Haniel Haddison, who oversees Special Duties at NCS Headquarters, commended the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, for driving synergy and innovation.
“This is a welcome idea for the Nigeria Customs Service, and we commend the Comptroller-General’s commitment to collaboration and capacity building,” Haddison said.

“This initiative will strengthen our competency and capability in combating smuggling.”
Rear Admiral Suleiman El-Ladan, Director of Maritime Research and Development at the DRDB, emphasized the importance of inter-agency cooperation, noting that partnerships of this nature are vital to addressing evolving security threats in Nigeria’s waterways.

The event concluded with the Director General of the DRDB presenting souvenirs to senior Customs officers in recognition of their participation and commitment to the joint effort.
