In a renewed effort to improve safety and public confidence in water transportation, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has officially launched its 2025 Waterways Safety Sensitisation Campaign.
The initiative kicked off this week with the distribution of certified life jackets across major jetties and riverine communities in the state.
The campaign, which aligns with LASWA’s ongoing mission to promote a safety-first culture on Lagos inland waterways, targets key jetties including Falomo, Ijede, Sangotedo, Badore, Ito-Omu, Tarzan, and Baiyeku. At these locations, LASWA officials engaged passengers, boat operators, and local residents in live safety demonstrations, interactive talks, and the free distribution of branded life jackets.
The sensitisation program emphasized critical safety practices such as proper life jacket usage, emergency response procedures, and compliance with LASWA’s mandatory safety regulations particularly the agency’s “No Life Jacket, No Boarding” policy.
In addition to life jackets, LASWA distributed educational materials and safety-themed souvenirs, including branded notebooks, pens, and leaflets, all designed to encourage consistent safety practices and raise awareness among waterways users.
This year’s campaign is especially significant as it coincides with the peak of the rainy season a period known for high tides, strong winds, and reduced visibility, which increase the risk of water-related incidents. LASWA’s proactive approach aims to mitigate these risks through sustained education and increased accessibility to safety gear.
Local stakeholders and commuters have commended LASWA for its consistent safety advocacy and visible presence in underserved riverine areas, highlighting the campaign as a step in the right direction toward safer, more reliable water transport in Lagos.
The agency says the sensitisation drive will continue in the coming weeks, with more outreach planned for additional communities and jetties across the state.
