MWUN Secures Compensation for Late Maritime Worker, Commends GMS Recruitment Services for Cooperation

The Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has recorded a significant breakthrough in securing compensation and justice for the family of its late member, Comrade Okwuwa Chinedu Godwin, who died on March 18, 2024, following an illness reportedly contracted while serving aboard a vessel.
The union disclosed that the case, which predated the administration of its President-General, Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, was revisited with renewed determination after he assumed office.
According to the union, Comrade Bunu pursued the matter with resilience and a strong commitment to protecting the welfare and rights of maritime workers, ensuring that due process was followed in line with extant labour laws and industry regulations.
MWUN stated that through sustained engagement and negotiations with GMS Recruitment Services Limited, the employer of the deceased, the company accepted the union’s demands and complied with the applicable Protection and Indemnity (P&I) provisions relating to the case.

The union described the outcome as a testament to its renewed commitment to defending the rights and welfare of maritime workers while ensuring that employers uphold their responsibilities to employees.
Speaking on the development, Comrade Francis Bunu expressed appreciation to the management of GMS Recruitment Services for its cooperation and willingness to resolve the matter amicably.
He stressed that every worker’s life is valuable and that employers must always demonstrate compassion and responsibility whenever workplace-related fatalities or injuries occur.
