President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday arrived at Eagle Square as the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) commenced its 8th elective National Convention in Abuja.
Also in attendance were Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, alongside APC governors, ministers, federal lawmakers, and party delegates from across the country.
The convention officially kicked off at about 8:15 p.m. on Friday, March 27, 2026, and is scheduled to run through March 28.
The gathering is expected to produce a new set of national executives who will steer the affairs of the party ahead of the 2027 general elections. The elected officials will also oversee party primaries for presidential, governorship, National Assembly, and state assembly positions.
Among those cleared for consensus positions is Professor Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda from Plateau State as National Chairman. Other key consensus figures include Hon. Abubakar Dalori (Deputy National Chairman, North) and Senator Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru, who is set to retain his role as National Secretary.
Additional consensus candidates include Professor Abdulkarim Abubakar Kana (Deputy National Secretary), Mu’azu Bawa Rijau (National Vice Chairman, North Central), Barrister Muritala Aliyu Kankia (National Legal Adviser), Felix Morka (National Publicity Secretary), and Dayo Israel (National Youth Leader).
In the contested positions, Chief Emma Eneukwu will square off against Hon. Ben Nwoye for Deputy National Chairman (South). Similarly, the race for National Welfare Secretary will be decided between Hon. Ignatius Nwapa and Hon. Nduka Anyanwu.
The outcome of the convention is expected to shape the party’s internal structure and strategic direction as it prepares for the next electoral cycle.
