President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has issued a directive requiring all political appointees in his administration who intend to contest elective positions in the 2027 general elections to resign by March 31, 2026.
The order, in line with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) timetable for party primaries, covers a wide range of presidential political appointees, including:
• Ministers and Ministers of State
• Special Advisers and Senior Special Assistants to the President
• Personal Assistants to the President
• Directors-General and CEOs of Federal Parastatals, Agencies, Commissions, and Government-owned Companies
• All other political appointees of the President
The circular, signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume, CON, and issued by Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, mni, requires affected officials to submit formal resignation letters through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation by the stated deadline.
President Tinubu stressed that the measure is aimed at ensuring full compliance with electoral laws, promoting transparency, and maintaining a level playing field for all aspirants. He called on all concerned officials to adhere strictly to the directive, highlighting the administration’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and credible electoral processes in Nigeria.
