Sailing Stronger Together: Nigeria, Tanzania Forge Maritime Power Pact

In a major step toward deepening regional cooperation and advancing maritime development in Africa, the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) has reaffirmed its commitment to closer collaboration with the government of Tanzania.

This renewed partnership was highlighted during a courtesy visit by a 19-member delegation from the United Republic of Tanzania to the NSC headquarters in Lagos.

Executive Secretary and CEO of the NSC, Dr. Akutah Pius, MON, described the visit as a positive stride toward building stronger maritime linkages across the continent. He noted that the collaboration would focus on key areas such as technical assistance, inter-port cooperation, infrastructure development, and capacity building all aimed at strengthening Tanzania’s shipping sector.

Dr. Akutah emphasized Nigeria’s supportive policy environment for private sector investment in port operations, commending Tanzania’s similar efforts to attract private investors into its maritime industry.

“The shipping business is capital intensive and must be driven by the private sector,” he stated, stressing the role of transport connectivity in achieving the goals of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Also speaking, Tanzanian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Ambassador Selestine Gervas Kakele, expressed Tanzania’s readiness to learn from Nigeria’s port regulatory frameworks and described the NSC as a strategic ally in building indigenous shipping capacity.

In a similar vein, Tanzania’s Deputy Attorney General, Sammel Marco Manene, acknowledged Nigeria’s strong performance in trade within West Africa, adding that Tanzania is exploring ways to leverage its geographical advantage for greater economic benefit.

Both nations agreed on the need to maintain and expand their robust trade relations, with future engagements planned to further strengthen maritime cooperation and drive inclusive growth across the African continent.
