The Network of Nigerian Maritime Journalists (NNMJ), a new umbrella body for all maritime correspondents in the country, has officially announced its formation and presence to journalists, government agencies, and key industry stakeholders.
The coalition, which brings together members of all existing maritime journalists’ beat associations, said its creation became necessary to foster greater unity, strengthen collaboration, and give maritime reporters a stronger collective voice.
According to the statement, membership of the NNMJ cuts across the League of Maritime Editors (LEAGUE), Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria (MARAN), Maritime Journalists’ Association of Nigeria (MAJAN), Shipping Correspondents Association of Nigeria (SCAN), Online Media Association of Nigeria (OMAN), the Congress of Nigerian Maritime Media Practitioners (CONMMEP), as well as independent maritime journalists not affiliated with any association.
The NNMJ appealed for support from government agencies, parastatals, and critical maritime stakeholders to make the initiative a success. It also pledged to roll out programmes that will promote seamless industry coverage and restore dignity to maritime journalists, who, it said, have in recent times been sidelined and undervalued.
“We sincerely thank all maritime journalists for their loyalty and support, and we extend our appreciation to everyone who has stood by us so far,” the coalition stated.
