The National Working Committee (NWC) of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) on Thursday held an emergency closed-door meeting in Lagos to address pressing issues affecting the party’s operations nationwide.
The high-level session, which lasted from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., brought together the party’s top executives, including Board of Trustees Chairman and Founder, Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, National Chairman, Dr. Agbo Major, and Secretary-General, Dr. Oginni Olaposi.
Speaking to journalists afterward at the NAGAFF Headquarters in Apapa, Dr. Aniebonam said the meeting focused primarily on the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) delay in recognizing and uploading the party’s newly elected national executives.
“We have written repeatedly to the commission and demanded that elections be halted until NNPP’s leadership issue is resolved to avoid litigations that may undermine Nigeria’s electoral process,” Aniebonam said.
He described INEC’s refusal to comply with court directives from the Abia State and FCT High Courts as “a constitutional abuse” that infringes on the NNPP’s right to full participation in elections.
The party leaders also discussed the alleged usurpation of the NNPP’s name by expelled members and confirmed that several presidential aspirants had approached the party ahead of the 2027 general election.
On its 2027 strategy, Aniebonam stressed that the NNPP will field its own presidential candidate but remains open to alliances with like-minded political parties. He assured that unlike in 2023, the ticket would not be handed to a single aspirant, but all contenders would face competitive primaries.
The NWC further deliberated on plans for a nationwide membership drive aimed at strengthening the party’s grassroots presence.
