The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, CON, has congratulated the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, on his election as Vice President of the International Association for Ports and Harbours (IAPH).
In a statement issued on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Dr. Bolaji Akinola, Oyetola described the election as a resounding endorsement of Dantsoho’s leadership and a global recognition of Nigeria’s growing influence in maritime affairs.
According to the Minister, the development reflects the significant strides achieved under the Federal Government’s port modernisation programme, which is repositioning Nigeria’s ports and driving the blue economy agenda.
“This election is a recognition of the ongoing reforms to reposition Nigerian ports and the blue economy drive of the Federal Government,” Oyetola said. “It validates our commitment to creating a more efficient, secure, and competitive maritime environment, which is a key component of our national economic strategy.”
He noted that the port modernisation initiative is designed to upgrade infrastructure, deploy modern technology, and streamline operations in order to elevate Nigerian ports to international standards and establish the country as Africa’s leading maritime hub.
The IAPH, which serves as a consultative body to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and other UN agencies, represents over 300 ports and port-related businesses across 90 countries. It plays a critical role in shaping global port policies, advancing sustainability, and fostering industry-wide collaboration.
Oyetola expressed confidence that Dantsoho’s new role will strengthen Nigeria’s voice in global maritime discourse and deepen international cooperation, adding that his wealth of experience will be invaluable in advancing both national and continental interests.
