MARAN Rallies Maritime Giants, Shifts MAMAL 2025 to New Date and Venue

The Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria (MARAN) is pulling together an impressive lineup of maritime industry leaders and security stakeholders for the 2025 edition of its flagship event, the MARAN Annual Maritime Lecture (MAMAL)  now slated for August 27, 2025, at the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Originally scheduled for August 28 at Eko Hotel, the event has been brought forward by a day and relocated to better accommodate expected guests and enhance logistical arrangements.

MARAN is rallying high-level participation from across the Nigerian maritime ecosystem, with confirmed guests including the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, Tantita Security Services, respected marine engineer Greg Ogbeifun, and the Maritime Security Providers Association of Nigeria (MASPAN).

Leading maritime legal luminaries such as Mrs. Funke Agbor, SAN, and Dr. Emeka Akabogu, SAN who is billed to deliver the keynote address  will also grace the high-powered gathering.
Key players from the private sector and shipping industry are also set to attend, including terminal operators, top executives of Lelook Bags, led by Chief Mrs. Chinwe Ezenwa, and representatives from influential industry associations such as: Nigerian Trawler Owners Association (NITOA) : Shipowners Association of Nigeria (SOAN) : Nigerian Shipowners Association (NISA):  African Shipowners Association (ASA) : Themed “Addressing the Burden of War Risk Insurance on Nigerian Maritime Trade,” MAMAL 2025 will explore the continued imposition of Extra War Risk Insurance (EWRI) premiums on vessels operating in Nigerian waters and across the Gulf of Guinea.

The forum will host strategic dialogues on maritime security, international shipping insurance practices, and the pressing need to declassify Nigeria’s waters as high-risk zones. Discussions will also spotlight the roles of key regulatory bodies such as NIMASA, the Nigerian Navy, and global classification societies like Lloyd’s of London.

President of MARAN, Godfrey Bivbere, emphasized the event’s significance, noting that MAMAL has consistently served as a rallying point for progressive maritime discourse.
He stated, “This summit is timely and critical. It will dissect the realities and misperceptions around war risk insurance, chart new directions for regulatory intervention, and drive actionable industry reforms for safer, fairer maritime trade conditions.”

Over 500 participants are expected to attend, including shipowners, insurers, naval representatives, maritime regulators, diplomats, and key international partners.

Barr. Temisan Omatseye (Former Director-General, NIMASA)
Senior officials from NIMASA, the Nigerian Navy, and leading international maritime organizations.

MAMAL 2025 promises to be one of the most consequential gatherings on Nigeria’s maritime calendar one that will set the tone for future policy direction and security strategies in the region.
