Nigerian Customs Cautions Travellers on U.S. Visa Misuse, Warns of Possible Sanctions

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has issued a public advisory urging Nigerian travellers to the United States to strictly adhere to the terms and conditions of their U.S. visas, warning against misuse that could lead to visa revocation or more serious consequences.

The advisory follows concerns raised by the United States Government over the misuse of entry visas by some Nigerian nationals, who allegedly engage in activities outside the scope of their visa classifications.

In a statement, the NCS emphasized that U.S. visa holders remain under continuous scrutiny even after entry into the country. “Security vetting does not end at the point of entry,” the Service warned, noting that any breach of U.S.

immigration laws, import/export regulations, or related protocols may result in visa cancellation and legal action.
The Customs Service also reminded travellers to declare any cash exceeding $10,000 or its equivalent when entering or exiting Nigeria, in accordance with international financial regulations.

Additionally, travellers are cautioned against carrying prohibited items and urged to ensure their luggage complies with both Nigerian and U.S. customs laws.

“Intending travellers must understand that fraudulent acts committed anywhere have consequences,” the NCS stated. “Individuals found guilty of misconduct abroad may face penalties both under U.S. and Nigerian law.”

Reaffirming its commitment to international travel standards, the NCS disclosed it is working closely with the U.S. Mission in Abuja to help Nigeria maintain eligibility for travel and avoid inclusion in any expanded visa restrictions that could affect law-abiding citizens.

The agency concluded by calling on all travellers to be responsible, transparent, and law-abiding as ambassadors of Nigeria abroad.
