The Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, CON, has inaugurated the newly constituted Governing Board of the Nigerian Ports Authority NPA, urging its members to embrace reform-driven governance and uphold professionalism in the discharge of their duties.
The inauguration ceremony, held on Monday, June 30, 2025, at the Ministry’s Conference Room in Abuja, marks a key step in the Federal Government’s renewed effort to reposition Nigeria’s maritime sector as a central pillar of national economic development.
In his remarks, Minister Oyetola described the event as a strategic move aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s broader vision to revitalize government institutions and deliver impactful reforms across critical sectors.
“This inauguration is a vital part of our commitment to institutional reforms that support trade facilitation, enhance transparency, and unlock the full potential of Nigeria’s marine and blue economy,” Oyetola said.
Highlighting the NPA Act, the Minister noted that the Governing Board plays a crucial role in policy oversight, particularly in staffing and financial matters, primarily through its Staff and Establishment Committee and Finance Committee. However, he was quick to reiterate that operational management remains the sole responsibility of the NPA’s executive leadership.
“It is important to emphasise that the day-to-day operations and execution of policy decisions remain solely the responsibility of the Managing Director and the Management Team,” he said, citing Section 10(3) of the NPA Act and the Public Procurement Act of 2007.
He stressed the importance of maintaining clear boundaries between governance and management to preserve operational integrity. He also called for constructive engagement between the Board and the NPA management, anchored on mutual respect, professionalism, and national interest.
“To the new Board Members, I congratulate you. I urge you to bring discipline, focus, and patriotism to your role. Your leadership will be key in developing a globally competitive and efficient port system,” Oyetola added.
Responding on behalf of the new Board, Chairman Senator Adedayo Adeyeye expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve, and to Minister Oyetola for his support throughout the nomination and inauguration process.
Adeyeye praised the calibre and diversity of the Board members, stating that their combined expertise would be instrumental in advancing the NPA’s mandate. He also commended the NPA Managing Director and executive team for their cooperation and commitment to collaboration.
“We are determined to work in unity with the management and the Ministry to deliver results. Under the guidance of the Honourable Minister, we will function with a spirit of shared purpose and without discord,” he said.
With the new Board now in place, expectations are high for a renewed era of strategic reforms, institutional synergy, and enhanced port operations that will drive Nigeria’s maritime sector towards global standards.
