NAGAFF Commends Customs Over Suspension of Transire Processing, Proposes Revenue Safeguards

The National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF) has commended the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) for suspending transire processing to bonded warehouses and free trade zones with outstanding reconciliations.
In a commendation letter addressed to the Comptroller-General of Customs, NAGAFF described the decision as a strategic measure aimed at strengthening revenue assurance, improving compliance and curbing potential revenue leakages.
The association said the suspension demonstrated the Service’s commitment to national security and effective revenue collection, adding that blocking avenues of potential leakage would enhance transparency and accountability across customs collection points.
To consolidate the gains, NAGAFF recommended the deployment of automated reconciliation systems to track transire movements in real time and ensure prompt settlement of outstanding transactions.
The association also called for continuous capacity building for customs officers and freight forwarders, regular engagement with bonded warehouse operators and free trade zone managers, and the adoption of risk-based monitoring and intelligence-driven audits to identify high-risk transactions.
NAGAFF further proposed an integrated revenue-assurance framework across customs collection points to promote consistency in revenue collection and reporting.
The freight forwarding body pledged its readiness to collaborate with the NCS on implementing the measures, saying stronger cooperation between regulators and industry stakeholders would support stability in revenue collection and strengthen Nigeria’s economic resilience.
