Lagos APC Buys Tinubu’s Ticket, Rallies Behind Hamzat for 2027

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos has thrown its weight behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections, while the state’s influential Governance Advisory Council (GAC) has adopted Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat as its consensus governorship candidate.
The development followed an extensive GAC meeting on Tuesday, attended by more than 20 senior party figures. Speaking after the session, GAC leader Tajudeen Olusi described the deliberations as “very exhaustive and engaging,” noting that discussions lasted nearly two hours.
According to Olusi, the meeting focused largely on strategic preparations for the 2027 elections, particularly the Lagos governorship race. While reaffirming the party’s commitment to democratic primaries, he noted that consensus arrangements remain a recognised tool for fostering unity.
“Our constitution guarantees free and fair primaries for all aspirants, but it also allows for consensus where necessary to maintain cohesion,” he said.

He disclosed that GAC members unanimously agreed to adopt Hamzat as their preferred candidate, pledging collective support for his emergence.
“We have all agreed that Dr. Olufemi Hamzat is our consensus candidate, and we will stand firmly behind him,” Olusi stated, adding that members had resolved to jointly fund his nomination form, with some contributing from personal resources.
Despite the endorsement, Olusi emphasised that the party’s formal primary process would still be observed.
“The primaries will hold as stipulated. This consensus only reflects our position as leaders,” he added.
In a related development, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu confirmed that the state chapter of the APC had purchased the presidential nomination form for Tinubu, signaling strong backing for his re-election bid.
“We firmly believe in the vision of our leader, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Buying his nomination form demonstrates our confidence in the Renewed Hope Agenda,” Sanwo-Olu said.
The governor had earlier, on Monday, publicly endorsed Hamzat’s governorship ambition, further consolidating support within party ranks.
Notable APC leaders present at the GAC meeting included former Deputy Governor Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, alongside senators Musiliu Obanikoro, Ganiyu Solomon, Tokunbo Abiru and Anthony Adefuye. Other attendees included Bushura Alebiosu and James Odunbaku.
The twin moves by the Lagos APC signal early political alignments within the party as preparations intensify for the 2027 electoral cycle.
