The Police in Akwa Ibom has detained a suspected Cameroonian over alleged defilement of a four-year old child in Mkpanak Village in Ibeno Local Government Area of the state.
DSP Timfon John, the Police Public Relations Officer, disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen in Uyo on Monday.
John said that Preliminary investigation revealed that the alleged incident occurred on Saturday, Feb. 14.
She said that one Gift reported that she observed a suspicious discharge from the private part of her four-year-old daughter while bathing her on Tuesday, Feb. 24, at about 1400 hours.
According to John, upon careful questioning, the child alleged that she had been sexually abused by an adult male who she stated she could identify if seen.
John said the police promptly issued a medical examination form, and the child was taken for immediate medical attention.
She said the operatives acting on credible intelligence swung into action and expanded surveillance within the neighbourhood.
She explained that the 36 years old Cameroonian, who is a fisherman resident in Mkpanak village, alongside others was arrested on Sunday and detained for investigation.
“An identification parade was subsequently conducted in accordance with laid-down procedures, during which the victim identified the suspect,” John said.
The Police spokesman said the command strongly condemns all forms of sexual abuse, especially against minors.
She assured the public of the command’s unwavering commitment to protecting vulnerable members of the society.
She urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious behaviour to the nearest Police Station.
