Ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Benue State, aspirants from the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party have begun building an uncommon political alliance aimed at unseating the incumbent administration.
The aspirants made their position known during the Benue PDP Expanded Caucus Meeting held in Makurdi, where they called on political stakeholders and residents of the state to set aside partisan differences and work collectively to “rescue” Benue from what they described as poor governance.
Speaking at the gathering, Pius Akutah, Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council and a governorship aspirant on the platform of the APC, emphasised the need for unity and peaceful coexistence as the 2027 elections approach.
Akutah warned against divisive politics, noting that unity among political actors and citizens would be crucial to achieving meaningful change in the state.
“We cannot afford to be divided because division will not help us achieve this purpose. We have to work together,” he said, adding that his presence at the meeting was to demonstrate solidarity with stakeholders committed to reclaiming the state.
Another APC aspirant, Sebastian Hon (SAN), expressed concern over the rising level of insecurity in Benue, describing the situation as an existential threat to the people.
According to him, the foremost responsibility of any government is the protection of lives and property, stressing that the current situation calls for urgent action and responsible leadership.
Also speaking, former Attorney-General of the Federation, Michael Aondoakaa, condemned violent politicking in the state and urged residents to reject intimidation and political violence, which he described as alien to Benue’s political culture.
Aondoakaa commended the strategic partnership reportedly coordinated by the immediate past governor of the state, Samuel Ortom, describing the initiative as a welcome development capable of galvanising support for political change.
On the PDP side, aspirants including Tor Ujah and Dennis Ityavyar also backed the proposed collaboration.
They urged the people of Benue to pursue legitimate and democratic means to ensure a new leadership emerges in the state in 2027.
Participants at the meeting stressed that unity among opposition figures across party lines could play a decisive role in shaping the outcome of the next governorship election.
