The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted 25 kilograms of cocaine valued at over ₦1 billion along the Seme border corridor, in a major anti-narcotics breakthrough.
The Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, disclosed this on Friday during the formal handover of the seized consignment to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Ikeja, Lagos.
Represented by the Deputy Comptroller-General in charge of Enforcement, Timi Bomodi, Adeniyi said the seizure followed actionable intelligence that led operatives of the Seme Area Command to intercept a Toyota Highlander conveying 22 packages of substances suspected to be cocaine.
The interception occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at about 3:00 a.m. along the Badagry-Seme axis. The illicit cargo weighed a total of 25 kilograms. One suspect was arrested in connection with the seizure.
According to the CGC, the successful operation was a direct outcome of intelligence-driven enforcement carried out under the leadership of the Seme Area Comptroller, Wale Adenuga.
He commended the professionalism and vigilance of the officers involved, noting that the seizure underscores the Service’s commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s borders against the trafficking of narcotics and other prohibited items.
Adeniyi stated that the action aligns with Section 55(1)(c) of the Nigeria Customs Service Act, 2023, which empowers the Service to enforce prohibitions and restrictions relating to the protection of public health and national security.
He added that in line with the NDLEA Act, Cap N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2024, and the existing Memorandum of Understanding between both agencies, the suspected cocaine, the vehicle used for conveyance, and the arrested suspect were formally handed over to the NDLEA Lagos Strategic Command for further investigation and prosecution.
The Customs boss described the seamless collaboration between the NCS and NDLEA as a testament to strengthened inter-agency cooperation in combating drug trafficking through intelligence sharing and joint operations.
He noted that the seizure comes shortly after the celebration of International Customs Day 2026, observed under the World Customs Organization’s theme, “Customs Protecting Society through Vigilance and Commitment.”
“Every day, our officers serve as the first line of defence against smuggling, illicit trade, and narcotics trafficking that threaten public health and national security,” he said, reaffirming the Service’s commitment not only to revenue generation and trade facilitation but also to protecting society.
Adeniyi assured Nigerians that the Service remains vigilant, adaptive to emerging threats, and steadfast in upholding integrity and professionalism in the discharge of its statutory responsibilities.
