NNPP to INEC, Nigerians: Disregard ‘Illegal’ Congresses by Kwankwaso-Led Kwankwasiya Group

The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the public to disregard the congresses announced by the Kwankwaso-led Kwankwasiya Movement, describing the exercise as unconstitutional and legally invalid.
In a statement issued on Monday by its National Secretary, Comrade Ogini Olaposi Sunday, the party said all court-ordered congresses mandated for the NNPP had already been duly conducted and concluded.

This follows a letter from the Kwankwaso faction to INEC, notifying the commission of its intention to conduct fresh congresses and a national convention between November 2025 and January 2026. The NNPP insisted that the faction has no such authority, noting that the Memorandum of Association it entered into with the Kwankwasiya group ahead of the 2023 presidential election “expired long ago.”
The statement further stressed that Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso—its 2023 presidential candidate—and several members of the Kwankwasiya Movement remain expelled for alleged anti-party activities.

“We are amazed that a man of Kwankwaso’s standing would insist on hijacking a party that gave him a soft landing to contest the 2023 presidential election for free,” the party said.
The NNPP also accused the faction of attempting to undermine valid judgments of the Abia State High Court and the FCT High Court, both of which, it said, affirmed the expulsion of Kwankwaso and his associates from the party’s internal processes.

“It is unfortunate that Senator Kwankwaso continues to conduct himself in a manner that disrespects and abuses court judgments,” the statement added.
The party criticised INEC for failing to act on multiple letters requesting compliance with court orders and for allegedly giving undue attention to “groups who want to cause crisis in our democracy.”
“As an umpire, INEC cannot afford to sit on the fence on matters that affect peace and the rule of law,” it said, urging the commission to upload the authentic leadership of the NNPP to its website in line with court directives.

The party directed its members nationwide to ignore the “fake congresses and convention,” while appealing to INEC to uphold the rule of law and contribute to strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
“The Renewed Hope Agenda of the current administration can only succeed if laws are obeyed and respected,” the statement concluded.
